2. Adolph Sax created the first saxophone in 1892. A small version of today's Alto saxophone.
3. The instrument was first used for classical music but found a new home with jazz music beginning in the early 1900's.
4. The introduction of the saxophone to jazz brought along the Tenor and Baritone saxophones. These are significantly bigger and produce lower sounds than the alto. The Tenor is ½ an octave lower than the Alto and the Baritone is 1 full octave lower.
5. The Bass Saxophone is 1 and ½ octaves lower than the original Alto Sax. As saxophone enthusiasts toyed with this intriguing new instrument, they created the Bass Sax along with the Soprano and Sopranino Sax, which are ½ and 1 octave higher pitched than the Alto!
