Newbery #1
Age: 9-11
Grade: 4-6
Title: Caddie Woodlawn
Author: Carol Ryrie Brink
Illustrator: NA
Publisher and Date: Macmillan Publishing Company, 1935
Illustrations: NA
Summary: Caddie Woodlawn, age 11, was a tomboy who ran the
woods of western Wisconsin. She avoided “women’s work” and
preferred to be an adventurer with her two brothers. From hunting to
befriending Indians, Caddie stirs up the west in this story full of
adventure.
Evaluation: I loved this book. I received it as a gift from my teacher in
the fourth grade and I loved it then too. I believe that it definitely
deserved the Newbery Award. In this book children learn courage, a bit
of history, and that it is OK not to be what everyone thinks you should
be.
